CARE Initiator Prof. Husi Letu Elected as New Chairman of IEEE GRSS Beijing Chapter

On January 10, 2025, the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE GRSS) Beijing Chapter successfully held its new term transition meeting online from 2:00 to 3:00 PM (Beijing time). Prof. Husi Letu, the initiator of the CARE, has been elected as the new chairman of the IEEE GRSS Beijing Chapter.

The meeting commenced with a detailed review of the Beijing Chapter’s development by its former chairman, Prof. Xiaolong Dong, Deputy Director of the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He outlined the chapter’s membership composition, noting that as of the end of December 2024, the chapter had 469 members, including 267 professional members and 202 student members. Established in 1998, the chapter has grown steadily over the past 26 years.

Following this, the delegate from the IEEE China Office, Wen Yan, delivered an in-depth presentation on the current status and future prospects of IEEE GRSS in China, offering valuable insights to the attendees.

Subsequently, Prof. Jiancheng Shi, the IEEE Fellow from the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the candidates for the new term to the participants, setting the stage for the election process.

The voting procedure was overseen by Assistant Prof. Fuyou Tian, the GRSS R10 Coordinator, who also served as the vote counter, with Wen Yan from the IEEE China Office acting as the monitor. Through a transparent online voting process, the IEEE GRSS Beijing Chapter elected its new leadership team, with Prof. Husi Letu as the new chairman.

The Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) is a technical society under the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It is dedicated to advancing the field of geoscience and remote sensing through scientific, engineering, application, and educational efforts for the benefit of society. With over 8,000 members from 94 countries worldwide, GRSS is a significant entity within the IEEE network. The Beijing Chapter draws its membership from prominent local research institutes and universities, including the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beihang University, and Beijing University of Chemical Technology.

The election of Prof. Husi Letu is expected to strengthen China’s voice and influence within international academic organizations such as IEEE GRSS, further enhancing the country’s contributions to the global geoscience and remote sensing community.
